On 24 May, the conservative former banker was sworn into the Presidency at a ceremony in Quito. He is inheriting numerous issues such as poor handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, crippling debt to the IMF, and a struggling economy. During his speech, Lasso blamed his socialist predecessors for many of these issues.
The era of unbridled corruption, authoritarianism, and political persecution is over in Ecuador. -Guillermo Lasso
Lasso’s free market agenda is embraced by many. However, there are concerns about his motives. For instance, his plans to privatize the Pacific Bank may constitute a conflict of interest as Lasso’s son heads the private banker’s association.
Overall, Lasso will undoubtedly face challenges pushing his concervative agenda as he does not have a majority in congress.
